Phil Brew is a PGA Member of Australia and Singapore and has been living and working in Singapore since 1999, teaching golf to thousands of people from all walks of life. His passion for the game and empathy for new golfers and seasoned golfers in their plight to become better golfers, coupled with his experience as a player through the game has made Phil one of the top coaches in the country. He loves people and loves the game and wants nothing more than to see happy golfers walking the fairways.
Oddly, Phil did not come from a background of having taken many lessons himself as a new golfer, much of his development was done through the ancient art of "monkey see, monkey do". Mimicking is one of the quickest ways to learn to play if you know how to do it. He even took the game up relatively late, at an age of 17, although prior to that, his childhood was riddled with sport. Rugby football, cricket and then tennis as he got a bit older – all these sports he played at a high level. But it was golf that really got Phil’s attention.
The chance to get outside in the fresh air, be one with Mother Nature, wrestle with her on occasions, escape the pressures of life for some well needed therapy. And then the whole challenge of the game, the intricacies and subtleties of it all, had the big guy mesmerized. He had finally found a game that could encapsulate his creativity as a sportsman, and with his imagination, was able to shine, shine like nobody has shined before.
Phil teaches his students to teach themselves. According to him, that is where the true joy is, the joy of self-discovery. Of course, he is there as your coach to help guide you through that process, but as he puts it, “you will not learn anything if you are not willing to get your hands dirty, not willing to put in some hard yards, not willing to make any mistakes.” The fear of making mistakes is the most crippling of afflictions – you must embrace mistakes and see them as an opportunity to learn something. You only learn not to fall once you have experienced the pain of falling.
Golf is a journey, always has been, always will be. Enjoy the journey.
